GAME OF 33

Clients often ask me “Why 33?”

We are all members of the Human race and as such we are imbued with some curious quirks of human nature. The one that fascinates me most is our tendency to feel inadequate and I have a theory that most of us feel less than adequate quite a lot of the time. We walk into a room full of people and somehow we become aware that one person is better dressed than we are, another is more cool maybe more successful, some are more intelligent and of course most are better looking! And we probably believe that we are the only inadequate person in the room because we imagine that everybody else feels perfectly OK!

Like many of us, when young I started to become aware of what I thought to be my own inadequacies and as childhood confidence gave way to adolescent insecurities I was curious to know how my friends and family really saw me.

So one day in 1977, aged 17yrs, I created a game that would help me understand myself better by finding out how I was perceived by others. What would they describe me as if I was car, a piece of furniture, a wild animal? Does my personality convey a stormy day with occasional bright spells or am I a hot summer’s afternoon.  I wanted to know what my friends thought of me and this game was going to allow me a subtle way of finding out whilst also having some fun.

“The Game of 33” is now played regularly at parties, by friends around a meal table, family gatherings, corporate events, training days, and also used by psychologists and teachers. And each time it is played people not only have fun but learn a little more about themselves and maybe understand better who they really are!

So Why 33?

Simply, since I was very young the number 33 was my favourite number and my school number so in essence the number chose me. It is also a number that has much significance and reputed mystical power, but it was when I discovered the Iching, an ancient Chinese system for harnessing synergy and coincidence that the real relevance became clear.

Without going in to long explanations, the Iching is an ancient system that uses hexagrams and the numbers (1-64) to provide guidance. More specific than astrology the user poses a question to the Iching and after a series of coin throwing the Iching reveals guidance and direction.

It was no coincidence that the Iching Number 33 represents = Withdrawal in order to advance confidently. Because that is often what playing the Game of 33 encourages you to do! Since on hearing how others percieve you, you may remove the charade to be who you really are.
